Data, Data, Data
Knowledge-Building for Teachers Series
As we finish up our state and district end of year assessments, climate surveys, and final data deep dives, I thought this would be a good time to refresh on the who, what, why, when, where, and how of all things data.

App
Teacher Tapp is a teacher survey app for teachers to share what is really going on in the classroom and in their schools. Three questions are asked daily about all things education and then the results are shared later. It is really interesting to see how teachers across the country are answering in relation to your own context. Teacher Tapp originates from England, but it does have a US version that you can choose when you download the app.
Flowcharts

Substacks
Data: Moving Beyond the Colors by Elana Gordon from Voices from the Field | Substack
What I love about this piece is it brings to light what the data is and is not telling us and that things may not be as good as they seem. As an example, a student may be proficient or advanced on an end-of-year Kindergarten assessment, but when you look at the benchmark and what is really being tested, that student may not actually be ready for first grade rigor.
Why We Don’t Talk About Summative and Formative Assessment by Becky Allen and Matthew Evans from 100% Assessment
This is an interesting and somewhat provocative take that all tests are formative and summative and should be used to both shape learning (formative) and surmise what a student can do (summative).

Handbook on formative and summative evaluation of student learning by Benjamin S. Bloom, J. Thomas Hastings, and George F. Madaus
This book is highlighted in How Teaching Happens in Section Six, Chapter 26: “The Many Faces and Uses of Assessment.” It’s pretty dense, so you can read the section about it in HTH; however, if you want to dive deep, read the original.
